Romano reveals truth on Barca's interest in Kalvin Phillips

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have made no attempts to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City this winter.

"Barcelona have not approached Man City for Kalvin Phillips so far, despite reports," Romano tweets.

"Loan deal considered too expensive at current conditions," the reporter adds.

Romano goes on to name West Ham as the club pushing hardest to sign Phillips before the transfer window closes at the end of January.

Barcelona said in December that they needed a new midfielder following the injury suffered by Gavi a month prior. However, the club's financial predicament means it's merely a wish.

However, Barca could do without a new signing as Xavi has players who could fit into a midfield triumvirate as seen with Pedri, Gundogan, De Jong, Fermin and Romeu on the fringes.

Xavi could also tinker with a central defender in a defensive midfield role if his options become further limited due to injuries and suspension. Andreas Christensen's name has popped up as a player who could possibly play the role if need be.
