Why Laporta is delaying sacking Xavi – explained

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is delaying sacking Xavi for financial reasons, according to Santi Gimenez of AS.

Financially, Barca cannot afford to pay off Xavi and Laporta knows this. Thus, the president has been stalling to take decisive action until Barca can balance their books in the summer.

Sources say Barca must balance their books with La Liga by June 30. The Blaugrana are expecting income from investors who signed a contract to purchase 49% of Barca Studios since last year. If that money doesn't arrive Barca would be unable to reach the 1:1 rule for Financial Fair Play in La Liga.

Failure to reach the 1:1 rule would mean that Barca will be unable to sign or register players without selling some important members of their current squad.

With all these problems surrounding the club, sacking Xavi should be the least of Laporta's worries.

Even if Barca manages to kick out the ex-midfielder, they would still struggle to find the money to pay a new coach. The other option is promoting Barca B coach Rafa Marquez to handle the first team. But many directors, including Laporta, don't rate Maquez.
