Chelsea humiliated by 15th-placed Brentford ahead of Madrid game, Rudiger scores suberb goal (video)

Real Madrid face Chelsea on Wednesday in the Champions League quarter-final.

Many Whites fans are concerned ahead of the game as Ancelotti's side has not been playing their best football lately. The win against Celta was possible only thanks to Thibaut Courtois' heroics. And the El Clasico defeat still hurts.

But Chelsea are not in better shape by the looks of it. On Saturday, they rolled over for lowly Brentford, who had been 15th in the standings before the game.

After a pedestrian second half, Toni Rudiger, previously linked with Madrid, opened the scoring with a brilliant long-range thunderbolt. He found the net from 39 yards out.

But Chelsea's joy was short-lived as Vitaly Janelt equalised within a minute. Note Azpilicueta's clownish defending for this goal.

The gates of hell opened for Chelsea as Christian Eriksen seized on a smart Mbeumo pass to make it 2-1. Surely a moment to cherish for the Dane, who collapsed on the field less than a year ago.

Brentford netted their third shortly after that. In another textbook case of punishing Chelsea on the break, Janelt bagged a brace after a combination involving Mbeumo and Toney.

Chelsea had a mountain to climb after that and, to their credit, they tried to get back into the game. Havertz scored after a sublime James free-kick cross but the goal was ruled out for handball.

Striker Yoane Wissa hit the final nail into the Blues' coffin late in the game, scoring after some comical defending by Rudiger and Thiago Silva.

It was one of the worst performances by Chelsea in recent months and Madrid fans have every right to look forward to the Champions League game with cautious optimism.

Speaking after the game, Thomas Tuchel accepted responsibility for the defeat but also blamed fatigue and unpredictable English weather for the result.

"It’s on us. It’s our fault," he said in the comments carried by The Sun.

"I don’t know why, but we lacked maturity in our defending and we were not aware of the danger in these moments, which is very strange for us.

"It’s normal to feel leggy after the international break and my expectations for this match were not high because of that.

"I felt we were more tired mentally than physically and not fresh enough, which is not normal for us.

"But also yesterday, we were wearing gloves and it was snowing during training and then today it was very, very warm."
