'We just lost the plot': Klopp reflects on shock Europa League defeat to Atalanta

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday.

The Reds boss was left baffled by his side's performance at home and reflected on what went wrong for them.

“We can make this the shortest press conference, it was a really bad game, oh my God,” said the Liverpool boss. “We started really well and then didn’t continue. Before they scored even, we just lost the plot a little bit.

“We were everywhere and nowhere. Midfield was spread like that, right midfield and left midfield, I didn’t recognise it a bit, it was really quite strange.

“In football terms, that’s tactical discipline. But we had a big chance from Darwin and unlucky from Harvey and then they scored a goal and then we kept playing into their hands, to be honest.

“A really good example of how it could have looked is the (disallowed) goal we scored. Striker wide, full-back on the left in a massive space, has all the time in the world to cross the ball and Mo scores. We should have had these situations more often. We didn’t use the man-marking besides that.

“Diogo came on and now we can’t think he is the solution. He needs time and was just happy to play and you could see that changed a lot.”
