Referee gets injured 3 minutes into Serie A clash between Bologna and Verona - here's what happened

The game between Bologna and Verona in Serie A took an unexpected turn early on as the referee got injured as early as three minutes after the kick-off.

As the home side were attacking, one of their players accidentally crossed paths with referee Rosario Abisso stepping onto his foot. As a result, Abisso hobbled off the pitch and asked for medical treatment from Bologna's medical team.

It quickly became obvious that Abisso wouldn't be able to continue and the fourth official Giacomo Camplone had to pick up the refereeing in the clash. It is only Camplone's ninth game in Serie A.

It doesn't really happen too often. In November 2017, a fan stepped in as a fourth official in a Championship clash following an injury to the assistant referee. The fan turned out to be a local referee and had an unexpected gig at a top level in unusual circumstances.
