Tottenham are set to trigger an option to extend Son Heung-min's contract

Tottenham are making a smart move by extending Son Heung-min's contract until June 2026. They're worried about losing their new captain, especially after accepting a hefty £100 million offer for Harry Kane from Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window. Kane had only one year left on his contract.

Son, who is 31, was also heading into the final year of his deal next summer. But there's a clause that Tottenham can use to automatically extend his contract for another 12 months, and they plan to do that soon. This means Son will stay with the club until just before his 34th birthday.

When he was given the captain's armband by Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou last month, Son pledged to give his all for the team. According to The Telegraph, the timing of when Tottenham will activate this clause isn't clear, but the club isn't worried, and they won't let their captain enter the final year of his contract next summer.

Since joining Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen eight years ago, Son has been one of their standout players, scoring 148 goals in 377 games and helping the team reach the 2019 Champions League final and the 2021 Carabao Cup final.
