Why is Cubarsi's new deal only three years long?

Pau Cubarsi broke into Barcelona's first team in January, quickly establishing himself as a starter. Along the way, he earned a couple of accolades and even managed to keep Osimhen at bay, pocketing the Nigerian on his Champions League debut.

On Thursday, the 17-year-old was handed a new improved deal, extending his stay at the club until 2027.

What's curious is that the original plan was for a five-year contract. Why wouldn't they offer a five-year deal then, you may wonder?

It all comes down to Pau's age. As a minor, he is not eligible to sign contracts lasting longer than three years.

As such, according to Relevo's Alex Pintanel, he will have to await his birthday to ink an extension for an additional two seasons - until 2029.
