The meaning of Real Madrid's "A Por La 14" jerseys

Having completed one of the most sensational comebacks in Champions League history by beating Manchester City in the 2021/22 season, Real Madrid were ready to celebrate their progress to the final with shirts emblazoned with the words 'A Por La 14'.

For a long time during the semi-final second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, it looked as though the shirts would not be needed to celebrate. In the 89th minute of the game, City led 1-0 in Madrid thanks to a goal from Riyad Mahrez, giving them a 5-3 lead on aggregate.

A quickfire brace from substitute Rodrygo Goes sent the game into extra time and City were left shell-shocked. From that moment on, the hosts were in control - and they quickly made it clear. Extra time lasted just five minutes when Ruben Dias brought down Karim Benzema in the box. The French superstar converted the penalty with ease.

What 'A Por La' means

Incidentally, this was the second time these kits had been worn.

Despite City's desperate attempts to equalize in the second half of extra time, the Spanish side booked their place in the final. After the final whistle, the team was overjoyed and each player was presented with a shirt emblazoned with the words "A Por La 14".

The English translation of "A Por La 14" is "All for the Number 14" (14 refers to their 14th European Championship). It's a slogan Real have used before, when they wore similar shirts after their semi-final win over Bayern in 2018. Back then, the shirts read "A Por La 13". They kept their word and went on to beat Liverpool 3-1 in the final.

Real Madrid, who have already won 13 European Cups before meeting Liverpool again in the 2022 final, extended their lead as the most successful team in Champions League history.

With their message on the back of the shirts they wore after the game, the boys in white assured their fans that they were determined to bring a 14th title back to the Spanish capital, which they did in Paris with Vinicius scoring the only goal of the game.
