Competing with RELEGATED teams: Key graph shows how woeful Man United have become defensively

Man United suffered a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Monday (6 May) to begin the month horribly.

The Red Devils produced some embarrassing defensive work. They were not at all helped by the makeshift duo of Casemiro and Jonny Evans.

Man United also allowed Palace to take 17 shot attempts. This continued the poor pattern of being too open and allowing opposition sides free reign at testing Andre Onana.

Erik ten Hag’s side has been conceding an average of 17.46 shots per game in the Premier League in the 2023/24 season.

This is actually comparable with how many shots teams RELEGATED from the Premier League over the last decade usually averaged during the campaigns in which they went down to the Championship.

In comparison, Sunderland, relegated in the 2016/17 season, conceded 17.84 shots per game. Norwich City actually let in fewer shots (16.29) in the 2021-22 season, when they finished bottom of the league table too.

This is an extremely worrying factor that Ten Hag needs to work hard to fix immediately or risk even more bad results in the final four matches of the 2023/24 season.
