Moyes explains why Maguire's proposed move to West Ham collapsed - it had nothing to do with the player

David Moyes has revealed that West Ham failed to take their bid for Harry Maguire any further.

Maguire has received criticism from Man United fans over the collapsed move. However, Moyes suggested that it may not be the Englishman's fault.

“We’re trying to have a competitive squad; a squad that can challenge for the European places in the Premier League," he said.

"And, to do that, we need competition. I don’t really talk about players at other clubs but we did make an offer for Harry Maguire, and just at the end we’ve not been able to take it any further.

"That’s unfortunate. We’re looking at several players at other clubs.”

Maguire lost the Manchester United captaincy earlier this summer and revealed his "extreme disappointment" at Ten Hag's call.

Last week West Ham agreed a fee in the region of £30m to sign Maguire, but the defender will not move to the London Stadium.

A source told Sky Sports News earlier this week: "Harry respects West Ham and David Moyes, but to be clear there was never an agreement in place between Harry and West Ham.

"The process was less advanced than portrayed in the media. For example, at no point has Harry spoken to David Moyes."

Maguire is expected to be part of the matchday squad to face Tottenham on Saturday.
