Attacking 4-3-3 continues: breaking down Man United’s formation in Burnley draw

Man United played out a frustrating 1-1 draw against Burnley to drop crucial points in their Premier League game on Tuesday.

Paul Pogba scored the opener in the 18th minute, but that was the only goal scored by the Red Devils – with Jay Rodriguez’s equalizer early in the second half helping the Clarets get a point.

Ralf Rangnick opted to go with a similar team that started the FA Cup game against Middlesbrough. Edinson Cavani replaced Cristiano Ronaldo up-front, while David de Gea came in for Dean Henderson.

He started with the same 4-3-3 formation that has been used in recent games. Pogba and Bruno Fernandes played as the two no.8’s, with Scott McTominay behind them in midfield.

The Red Devils dominated the first half, attempting 15 shots, having 2 goals disallowed, and scoring one. But their momentum fell in the second half after the equalizer and forced Rangnick into making changes.

Ronaldo was subbed in for Cavani after the hour-mark as United pushed for a winner. After being repeatedly denied, Rangnick was forced to make even more attacking changes. Jesse Lingard replaced McTominay, while Anthony Elanga came on for Marcus Rashford in the last 5 minutes.

With the changes, Pogba moved back into a deeper role – with Lingard playing as a no.10 alongside Bruno as United pushed forward. However, they couldn’t really make any difference in the game as United had to settle for a draw.
