'Intellectual': Who is Pedro Marques, the new director of football development for Liverpool

Pedro Marques has been appointed as Liverpool's director of football development alongside the new technical director Julian Ward.

Pedro Marques brings a unique blend of intelligence, communication skills, and analytical prowess to his new role. Marques began his career at Sporting Lisbon, where he quickly rose through the ranks due to his ambition, work ethic, and knowledge of the game.

His innovative approach to data analysis and opposition scouting caught the attention of Manchester City, where he played a key role in revolutionizing their performance analysis department.

Marques's focus on player positioning and passing patterns reshaped opposition analysis and influenced training sessions under managers like Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini.

Now joining FSG alongside Julian Ward, Marques will play a central role in the global expansion plans of the organization, leveraging his expertise to implement a unified football blueprint across multiple clubs.

Simon Wilson, former director of football services at City Football Group, praises Marques for his ability to translate coaching methodologies into actionable models and his background in performance analysis.

Wilson said: "Pedro is a football intellectual. He can distil a game model down to a set of simple categories and moments. But if you want to, he can go right down the mineshaft and pick out the tiniest details."

Former Sporting director Pedro Barbosa added: "Pedro is intelligent, he communicates well and he can bring people together with common objectives... He will be a fantastic person for Liverpool."
