Klopp says Liverpool 'should have' beaten Man United — is it true? Analysed

Liverpool and Man United played out a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, Luis Diaz and Mo Salah scoring for the Reds.

“We should have won the game, that’s clear,” Jurgen Klopp said in his post-match interview after the game. Let's take a look at stats to see if he's correct.

Liverpool had 28 attempts, the most Man United have faced in a home Premier League game since Opta records began in the 2003/04 season. Of these shots, only 7 were on target though. The home side managed less than that though: nine shots in total, five on target.

Liverpool also enjoyed significantly more possession (63% vs 37%). But there are other stats that show how striking the difference between the two sides was.

One is xG, expected goals. Man United managed the combined xG of 0.71 while Liverpool recorded 3.59 xG. Another is the number of big chances — for one big chance the hosts had, the Reds created seven (!) big chances. And missed five of them.

So Klopp is definitely right. Man United rode their luck. A fair scoreline would have been a 3-1 or 4-1 Liverpool win, not a 2-2 draw.
