Two Liverpool centre-backs named among five best in world — but not Gomez, Konate or Quansah

Football scouting company Comparisonator has used AI to determine the world's best centre-backs based on their stats so far this season.

Virgil van Dijk has come first, followed by Bayern's Kim Min-jae Kim and Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck. Arsenal's William Saliba comes fourth.

The fifth place is rather surprising as it belongs to another Liverpool defender but not Ibou Konate, Joe Gomez or Jarell Quansah (or Joel Matip, for that matter).

It's Sepp van den Berg, a Liverpool loanee currently plying his trade with Mainz in the Bundesliga.

We don't know which stats Comparisonator use and how exactly they compare players. Van den Berg has made 25 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, scoring twice and collecting eight bookings.

The Dutchman particularly excels in the air, winning 4.73 aerial duels per 90 minutes which puts him among the world's top 5% centre-backs in that category.
