Van Dijk 7.5, Gakpo 2: Liverpool player ratings in Man United defeat

Liverpool suffered a 4-3 extra-time defeat against Man United at Old Trafford.

It was an insane game, an instant classic. Unfortunately, the result didn't go the Reds' way but it was a sensational match. Here are our ratings.

Van Dijk: 7.5/10. Stamped his authority on the game with well-timed tackles and interceptions. His reading of the game is unrivalled. Put Hojlund in his pocket, where the Dane probably had a chat with Erling Haaland, who's been there since last week. However, should have come tighter to McTominay when Rashford scored.

Salah: 7.5. Almost scored a brilliant acrobatic goal early in the game. Provided an assist for Endo's disallowed goal. Was in the right place at the right time to put Liverpool ahead shortly before the break. Could have done better in some situations though, his poor pass for Szoboszlai cost Liverpool what could have been a goal a few minutes after the break.

Endo: 7.5. Lost position a few times but his work rate was absolutely insane. Should have put pressure on Antony before the Brazilian scored. Unlucky to have his goal ruled out for a marginal Salah offside.

Mac Allister: 7. Excellent effort for the equaliser, overall a quite decent creative performance. Helped defensively, too.

Gomez: 6.5. Poor defending for Mctominay's goal, his shot shortly after conceding the opener was comically bad. Redeemed himself with an excellent pressing action on Bruno, winning the ball which led to Salah's goal.

Kelleher: 6.5. Excellent saves throughout the game on the likes of Rashford and McTominay but should have saved Amad's effort which decided the tie. Chances are that without Kweev, Liverpool would've lost in regulation time.

Diaz: 6.5. A typical Lucho performance, beautiful dribbles but also lost the ball way too often. Very dangerous on the break. Looked absolutely jaded in extra time.

Quansah: 5.5. Poor defending for Man United's opener but excellent run before Mac Allister's equaliser. Some excellent tackles but should have done better for Antony's goal.

Szoboszlai: 5.5. Not as involved as he would have liked and found wanting defensively on a few occasions. Had a couple of very decent long shots saved.

Bradley: 5.5. Didn't come tight to Garnacho just before the Antony equaliser. Didn't offer the much-needed energy going forward.

Darwin: 5. Relentless. Tormented the United defenders for the entirety of the game, Varane will probably have nightmares of Darwin for a few months. Made a lot of runs that were often ignored by his teammates, especially in the first half.

The negatives outweigh the positives though. Failed to score. At fault for Rashford's goal as he gave the ball away cheaply in a simple situation. You can't make stupid mistakes like this in your own half.

Elliott: 5. How do you rate Elliott today? Harv came on and scored in extra time — but then lost the ball in a really stupid fashion which led to Amad's winning goal for United.

Gakpo: 2. Held the ball for too long and played a sloppy pass to Elliott when Liverpool went on a five-against-two counter-attack. It's not just that, overall an uninspired performance.

Others: Robertson 5.5, Tsimikas, Clark N/A
