What would have been a fair scoreline in Liverpool v Villa? Answered through stats

Liverpool couldn't get the three points they so desperately needed on Saturday as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at Anfield. The visitors opened the scoring through Ramsey shortly before the half-hour mark and the Reds responded through Firmino late in the game.

Sofascore, a stats website, say that Aston Villa's xG (expected goals) stood at 1.35, much better than Liverpool's 0.75. However, the Reds dominated possession (66% to Villa's 34%), had more attempts (10 to 6) and shots on target (5 to 3).

Curiously, the Reds managed to create only one big chance throughout the game — and Firmino converted it. Villa were much better at chance creation, generating three big opportunities. One of them was Ramsey's goal, the other two were Watkins' missed penalty and Ramsey's effort in the 39th minute which was saved by Alisson.

Overall, we can say that a 1-1 draw or Villa's 2-1 victory could have been fair results. It was a game for which the Reds didn't really turn up — they didn't deserve to win with a performance like that.
