Argentina win World Cup, Konate played important role in France's extra-time equaliser

Argentina have won the 2022 World Cup in one of the best finals we've ever seen.

Leo Messi opened the scoring from the spot in the 23rd minute. Angel di Maria doubled Argentina's lead 13 minutes after the opener.

Kylian Mbappe bagged a 90-second brace late in the second half, taking the game to extra time.

Messi scored Argentina's third in the 108th minute. However, Mbappe equalised from the spot in the 117th minute after the ball hit Montiel's arm.

The game went to penalties. Coman and Tchouameni missed their attempts and Argentina lifted the trophy.

The only Liverpool player in both teams' squads, Ibrahima Konate, did not make the starting XI. He was brought on in the 113th minute after Raphael Varane was subbed off with an injury.

Ibou won the corner that led to the extra-time penalty Mbappe scored.

The Reds centre-back made five appearances (three starts) at the World Cup, putting in particularly impressive shifts against Australia and Morocco.
