How ex-Reds offloaded last year have fared at their new clubs: Coutinho, Can & more (part II)

Philippe Coutinho

What happened? "Brazilian attacker Philippe Coutinho decided that after four years at Anfield, enough was enough. He wanted out and he wanted a dream move to Barcelona. The saga, and yes we think this one qualifies as a saga, all started in the summer of 2017, with the Reds rejecting three bids from the Catalan giants and a transfer request from Coutinho.

"But after spending six more months at Anfield he'd get his move to the Camp Nou, with Barcelona forced to pay an eye-watering £145m and Michael Edwards even managed to negotiate a £100m surcharge if they try to buy another Reds player before 2020."

Did it work out for Liverpool? "In a word, yes. Liverpool have developed as a unit since Coutinho's departure, improving both domestically and in Europe. Liverpool have missed the little Brazilian's individual magic at times, but Klopp's side have no doubt got better in his absence."

Did it work out for Coutinho? "Yes and no. Coutinho has had his moments with Barcelona, but he has failed to establish himself as an automatic pick in Ernesto Valverde's midfield. The 26-year-old scored just five goals in the first half of 2018/19 and struggled for form at the end of the year."

Emre Can

"Emre Can refused to sign a new contract at Liverpool and the Reds played it cool, letting the German midfielder leave on a free for Juventus at the end of the season.

Did it work out for Liverpool? "Emre Can's name has barely been mentioned on Merseyside since his departure, and with Liverpool spending big on Fabinho and Naby Keita, he doesn't appear to be missed at all."

Did it work out for Can? "It's probably too early to tell. Can has made 16 appearances in all competitions without scoring. The German has recently struggled for form, making just six Serie A starts and with Aaron Ramsey reportedly set to join Juventus on a free transfer, he could be in for a major fight for his place."

Danny Ward

What happened? "It look for a moment in the summer that Danny Ward would get his chance at Liverpool, but then the Reds signed Alisson from Roma and the Welshman was sold to Leicester City."

Did it work out for Liverpool? "Another complete success for the Reds. Alisson has been excellent since arriving at Anfield and Liverpool banked around £13m for Ward."

Did it work out for Ward? "Not exactly. The Welshman has swapped being out of the squad at Liverpool for being on the bench at Leicester, with Kasper Schmeichel remaining the Foxes' number one."

Loris Karius

What happened? "Kiev. We'll say no more than that. Loris Karius would then depart to Besiktas on a two-year loan deal with the Turkish club obligated to buy the German if certain criteria is met."

Did it work out for Liverpool? "100 percent. See Danny Ward."

Did it work out for Karius? "Karius has had his moments at Besiktas. The goalkeeper endured a calamitous night in Norway against Sarpsborg 08 in Europa League action back in November, but has also enjoyed some solid performances."
