UEFA eases multi-club rules to allow teams owned by same group to compete in different competitions

UEFA has made a subtle change to its regulations regarding multi-club ownership groups, ahead of the upcoming alterations to its club competitions next season.

Starting from the 2024-25 campaign, clubs under common ownership will be permitted to compete in different UEFA competitions, even if they are prevented from participating in the same tournament.

For instance, clubs like Manchester United and Nice, both owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe's company INEOS, could potentially feature in the Champions League and Europa League or Conference League, respectively.

While the adjustment to UEFA's rules on multi-club ownership may appear subtle, it signifies a relaxation rather than a tightening of regulations. This shift is noteworthy considering the increasing number of clubs under common ownership.

With the expansion and format changes to UEFA competitions, particularly the move to single-table formats and an increase to 36 teams per competition, concerns about the integrity of the competitions are evident.

What was once an occasional issue may now arise more frequently throughout each season, highlighting the evolving landscape of club ownership and its impact on European football.
