BBC remove Wayne Rooney tweet after Lineker tells them to delete it

The BBC recently pulled down a tweet discussing Wayne Rooney's sacking as the manager of Birmingham. The removal of the tweet came after a request from Gary Lineker.

This news arrived on Tuesday morning as Birmingham revealed the departure of the Manchester United legend. Surprisingly, Rooney's tenure lasted less than three months.

His record of only two victories in 15 games at St Andrew's led to this decision, with the team's recent 3-0 loss against Leeds on New Year's Day being the last nail in the coffin.

Right after the official Birmingham statement, the BBC Sport Twitter account posted a photo of Rooney as a member of the Peaky Blinders - the popular BBC show set in Birmingham.

The post left fans puzzled, drawing confusion among them. Match of the Day host Lineker appeared unimpressed by it too.

In a direct response to the original post, Lineker's comment was short and clear: "Delete this." Following his comment, the post vanished from the BBC Sport page.

After the news of his dismissal, Wayne Rooney took to his Instagram page to share a statement. In it, he expressed gratitude to the ownership group for the chance to manage the club.

He wrote: "I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they gave me during my short period with the club.

"Football is a results business – and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be. However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed."

"Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback. I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16."

"Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager. Finally, I wish Birmingham City FC and its owners my best wishes in the pursuit of their ambitions."
