Laporta says Barca rejected €100m offer for De Jong: 2 reasons why they should've accepted it

According to Barcelona president Joan Laporta, the club received an offer worth €100m for Frenkie De Jong but they rejected it.

"Not everyone is transferable," Laporta said.

"We had an offer for De Jong worth €100m, and I think we were right not to accept it."

However, Barcelona have reasons to have accepted the money and let the Dutchman go.

His high salary

De Jong is currently the highest-paid player at Barcelona bagging €37m gross salary per season. His net yearly salary is €18m.year which is €8m than what Robert Lewandowski earns.

Frenkie has refused to lower his salary at Barcelona after doing so during the regime of Josep Bartomeu in 2020.

Today, Barca are struggling to register players because of their humongous wage bill. That was exactly why they couldn't guarantee to register Lionel Messi and he ended up joining Inter Miami.

Player arrivals

Barcelona are pushing to sign veteran midfielders in their bid to replace Sergio Busquets. We've heard Barca being linked to the likes of Oriol Romeu, Dani Parejo and Marcelo Brozovic. Beside not being Barca quality, all those players are well above 30.

Barca are so financially constrained that they couldn't even sign Brozovic who was available for around €25m.

What's more, Barca lost out on superb midfielders like Sofyan Amrabat, Joshua Kimmich and Martin Zubimendi because they couldn't afford them. Ilkay Gundogan was only signed because Barca didn't have to pay a transfer fee.

Barca are also in need of a right-back and an attacker to improve their squad this summer. But they simply can't get all their wishes because they lack the resources if players don't get sold.

De Jong is a high-quality player who was immense at Barca last season. However, selling him might've helped the club aspire to even more greatness without scrapping the barrel like they're doing now.

Sacrifices can always be made for the greater good.
