'If I wasn't playing, I'd be in the stands with you': Gilchrist explains what Chelsea means to him

Cobham graduate Alfie Gilchrist signed a new contract earlier this week. The young defender committed his future to Chelsea until 2026, with an option to extend by a further year.

The 20-year-old is the latest in line of boyhood Blues supporters to establish himself with the first team.

Gilchrist said in an interview with Chelsea's media team: "People often ask, what does Chelsea mean to you? Well, put it this way. If I wasn’t playing, I’d probably be in the stands with you. Side by side, cheering the boys on. You see, this is my club.

"Signing a contract here means everything to me. Playing for this club is what I want to do and I’d love to be captain one day. We’ll see what happens next; I’m ready to do anything."
