Gilchrist: 'No one would be saying I'm a no-nonsense, old-school defender if I had long hair'

Speaking with Chelsea's media team in a brief interview, Alfie Gilchrist said: "Yeah, it's a good comparison to no-nonsense, old-school defender. It's probably because of my haircut.

"It I had long hair, probably, no one would be saying that.

"I have a good connection with Chelsea fans because I'm one of them so I know what they like and what behaviors and what a Chelsea player should look lile.

"Being surrounded by [Chelsea academy] graduates that are now captains means a lot. Obviously that's an ambition for me since I was young."

The defender has broken into the Chelsea first-team squad this season. The 20-year-old has made 11 appearances for the Blues across all competitions so far this term, although most times he was used as a very late-game substitutions. Out of these 11 games, three were starts, all in the FA Cup.

Gilchrist has earned the 'next John Terry' nickname from Chelsea supporters for his defending ability and hardman image.
