Are any Chelsea loanees doing well?

In the space of a week, Chelsea recalled two of their summer loanees after they had endured disappointing spells in the first half of the season.

First, Chelsea recalled Andrey Santos from his nightmare at Nottingham Forest before doing the same for David Datro Fofana from Union Berlin.

We've also heard whispers of Hakim Ziyech's loan at Galatasaray possibly being ripped up due to some underwhelming performances.

Recall that Chelsea sent out 10 players on loan back in the summer of 2023.

The question now is, are any Chelsea loanees doing well?

The simple answer is yes, but not many of them. Let's do a quick run down to give you a better picture of what's going on.

Angelo: The Brazilian is yet to score in his spell at Chelsea's partner club Strasbourg. But he's not being starved of game time even though he barely starts. He's so far featured in 16 league games registering three assists, including one in Strasbourg's last game of 2023 where they won to maintain a three-game winning streak.

Verdict: Developing well

Cesare Casadei: The Italian midfielder has been showing Chelsea what they're missing for sending him on loan to Leicester. He plays regularly under Italian gaffer Enzo Maresca with Leicester looking too good for the Championship. So far Casadei has scored three goals and two assists in his 24 appearances.

Verdict: Developing superbly

Ziyech: It's not like Ziyech has played badly in Turkey. We saw him bag a brace in the Champions League against Manchester United. He's so far bagged four goals and two assists in his 14 appearances so far. The Moroccan played 793 minutes of football for Galatasaray which is more than he can say for his Chelsea days.

Verdict: Not bad

Romelu Lukaku: The big Belgian is making many Chelsea fans reconsider hating him so much given his superb performances at AS Roma. Lukaku has so far bagged 14 goals and two assists in his 22 appearances. What more can you demand of a striker?

Verdict: Top draw

Lewis Hall: Newcastle are expected to sign Hall permanently in the summer, but for now he's nowhere near a regular starter despite the injuries hitting Newcastle. The Englishman has played 10 matches so far starting just two of those.

Verdict: Not that good

Diego Moreira: The Portuguese winger has been struggling in a woeful Lyon team who seem destined for relegation this season. Moreira has featured just six times for OL this season starting three of those games. It won't be a surprise if Chelsea decades to recall him too.

Verdict: Not good enough

Gabriel Slonina: The American goalie is playing regularly on loan KAS Eupen in Belgium. However, his team are not doing well and he's only kept one clean sheet in 19 games while conceding 41 goals. Chelsea might need to keep him there a little longer.

Verdict: Not good enough

Chelsea also loaned out players from their under-21s like Omari Hutchinson to Ipswich and Bashir Humphreys to Swansea. Both players are not doing badly so far considering they play regularly for their respective clubs.

As for Fofana and Santos, they're both expected to be farmed out on loan before the transfer window shuts. Although in the case of Santos, he could stay and help Chelsea with Lesley Ugochukwu injured.
