Alfie Gilchrist replaced Cole Palmer in the added time of the Luton game. Chelsea were 3-2 up and at a risk of letting the Hatters get a draw.

So it's not that the youngster came on in a no-pressure environment. He was thrown against the side that tasted the blood and actively searched for an equaliser.

And in just three minutes on the pitch, the 20-year-old managed to make a crucial tackle as the opposition forward Alfie Doughty looked to get into the Blues' box.

This surely puts Gilchrist in contention for more minutes this season. So far the centre-back has made just two substitute appearances — yes, the Luton one was his second game in the Blues' shirt.
