4 striker options for Chelsea to choose from in January transfer window

After Chelsea's 2-1 loss to Wolves, Mauricio Pochettino said that his side lost the game due to their 'lack of capacity to score'.

With the January transfer window right around the corner, let's have a look at the players Chelsea could pursue in the next month to remedy their scoring problem.

Serhou Guirassy

Guirassy has been a scoring revelation this season. The Stuttgart forward has 17 league goals in just 14 games. His scoring prowess has taken Stuttgart from the 16th place, a relegation play-off position to 3rd in the Bundesliga this season. They sit just 4 points behind Bayern in 2nd place although the Bavarians have a game in hand.

The 27-year-old has a release clause of just £15.2 million but will be away for AFCON in January and potentially some part of February with Guniea. Both are important considerations if Chelsea are to pursue him, especially considering there has been interest from Newcastle and Man United too.

Santiago Giménez

The Feyenoord striker is another to have lit up his league this season as he netted 18 times in the first 16 games of the league season. And just recently, Gimenez has surpassed Luis Suarez’s record of 30 Eredivisie goals in a calendar year by netting his 31st.

Gimenez is a 22-year-old striker who can play with his back to the goal and also has the acceleration and agility to turn and shoot to score, an important quality for a striker in the Premier League.

He is five years younger than Guirassy and that means his transfer fee is much higher, with Feyenoord expected to demand £60m for him. That amount will be tough for Chelsea to cough up, given their FFP limitations.

Ivan Toney

A player that is much more familiar to Chelsea fans, Toney had been Brentford's talisman last couple of seasons until a betting scandal saw him get banned.

He scored an impressive 20 goals in 33 Premier League games last season which means he knows how to find the net in the English game.

Brentford technical director Lee Dykes, admitted last week that “maybe the time comes very shortly that Ivan moves on to another club”.

With Toney's ban ending on January 16, Spurs and Arsenal are other interested parties vying for his signature, though his £100 million price tag may put off suitors.

Viktor Gyökeres

Gyokeres is a 25-year-old Swedish striker who plays for Sporting and has scored 10 goals and got 5 assists in 13 league games this season to help them reach the top of the table.

Last season he was at Coventry City and his 31 goals and assists in 46 games helped them reach the Championship playoffs.

Sporting paid Coventry a club record €20 million fee to sign him and their league form — first with most goals scored — is proof that it is already paying dividends. Arsenal, Chelsea and Milan are interested in signing him but his release clause has been set at €100 million.
