Chelsea fan notices Tuchel's peculiar instruction for Chilwell - explains how Alonso would fit in too

We're used to seeing wing-backs running from one end of the pitch to the other, keeping close to the touchline.

However, it appears as if Thomas Tuchel prepared something different for the Southampton game. Ben Chilwell's tended not to overlap but to underlap left winger Callum Hudson-Odoi who usually remained wide.

Here's ScorpiaHP, a Chelsea fan on Reddit, explaining how such an arrangement could work to the benefit of Chilwell - and why Marcos Alonso could be used in a similar role too.

"Found it very interesting that Tuchel instructed Chilly to come infield more often than not, with CHO playing out wide.

"CHO is the most natural winger in the team and seems more comfortable cutting in from a wide position after beating a player or two.

"That way he'd also draw players and enable our left wing-back or left central midfielder to run into the half-space and attempt a cutback routine to our strikers.

"A very effective pattern of play that top teams use but we haven't really. Chilly used to underlap a lot under Rodgers [at Leicester] (with Barnes playing wide) and his pace really enables us to play those diagonal passes to him in behind defences.

"Alonso doesn't have the pace or acceleration to reach those passes before they go out of play/are intercepted, but he also likes playing infield and getting into the box so this type of setup would suit him more than one in which he's a wider wingback."
