Unconvincing bid, Odegaard plans: Why Arsenal lost Buendia transfer race to Aston Villa

Emiliano Buendia is an Aston Villa player, it was confirmed by the Birmingham-based club.

Arsenal were interested in landing the Argentine but ultimately lost the transfer race, leaving the Gunners faithful scratching their heads over the club losing its pull power and a general lack of direction in Arsenal's recruitment.

But the story is more complex than that.

First of all, Villa simply lodged a better bid than the Gunners.

As per the BBC, Dean Smith's side will pay a £33m transfer fee that could rise up to £38m and includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause.

And as reported by journalist Chris Wheatley, Arsenal matched Villa's offer in terms of money but wanted to structure the deal differently, and saw their bid rejected by Norwich.

Secondly, Villa offered Buendia first-team football, something Arsenal were not ready to promise.

As per journalist James Benge, the Lions presented the playmaker with a 'clear' plan of how he would be used at his new club, and it helped convinced the Argentine.

Additionally, Martin Odegaard tops Arsenal's wishlist for the summer campaign, so Buendia was considered a 'Plan B'.

As per Wheatley, Edu Gaspar is confident the Gunners would retain the Norwegian for the next season, either on loan or on a permanent deal, so Arsenal did not push for the Buendia move.
