3 most problematic positions Arsenal have right now - explained

Back-up left-back

Kieran Tierney has impressed everyone and looks like a real deal to be our main left-back for many more years to come. The problem is that he has no proper cover.

The 23-year-old has had injury problems throughout his career, and at Arsenal in particular. The Gunners badly need a solid backup option in this position, which we lacked massively in the past season.

Mikel Arteta relied heavily on Granit Xhaka at the end of the season when Kieran was sidelined but to tell the truth that experiment didn't pay off. Yes, we have Cedric who is capable of playing at both flanks. But using a right-footed full-back at left-back doesn't sound like a real solution.

All in all, signing a new left-back is a must this summer.

Right-back

We are yet to find out who's actually leaving and who's staying but what we know for sure is that Arteta doesn't have a first-choice option at right-back.

He switched between the trio of Hector Bellerin, Cedric and Calum Chambers last season with none of them getting consistent starts.

The Spaniard is expected to leave Arsenal in this transfer window and the Portuguese mysteriously lost Arteta's trust in the second part of the season.

Calum has improved massively since returning from injury but let's not forget that he's not a natural full-back.

It leads us to a conclusion that this position requires a new addition which would be an upgrade on each of the three. Max Aarons from Norwich and Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan have been linked with a move to the Emirates but it's not yet clear if Arsenal indeed plan to land one of the two.

However, if the Gunners have the ambition to fight for the top four next season they have to shell out money for a new top-class right-back.

Midfield

This one should probably be divided into attacking and central midfield.

Last season, the introduction of Emile Smith Rowe mid-season and switching to a formation with a no. 10 changed our fortunes drastically. The arrival of Martin Odegaard further underlined the importance of having a skilful player in that position to make things happen in the final third.

According to reports, buying an attacking midfielder is a priority for Arsenal with Odegaard and Emiliano Buendia featuring on the summer shortlist. If at least one of them joins us in the summer, we'll be well-stocked in this position.

There is much more uncertainty with the central midfield. Thomas Partey seems to be the only midfielder whose long-term future lies with Arsenal. Xhaka is linked with a move to Roma and Mo Elneny's future is up in the air with just 1 year left on his contract.

We need a minimum of two fresh additions to central midfield to have the numbers to sustain a challenging season on multiple fronts.

Yves Bissouma and Houssem Aouar have been mentioned as players considered by the club's recruitment department for midfield.

All in all, we need to sign 5-6 players in the market to get a well-equipped squad for the next campaign.
